A keycap is a small cover made from plastic that is positioned on top of the key switch on a keyboard. Keycaps typically have inscriptions that denote the alphanumeric character or keyboard function that they correspond to. The top surface of a keycap is usually concave shaped, with the edges extending further than the center. Current user preference is for concave topped keycaps as opposed to those that are spherical, laptop caps are usually flat.
The unknown history
The earliest keyboards were designed with the keycaps and key switches combined, removable caps were later designed to allow for the creation of different keyboard layouts. First manufactured in the 1970s and 80s, keycaps were made through two-shot molding. The inscriptions were molded onto each cap with different colored plastic. This approach, however, was eventually abandoned because of its cost (especially during tooling) and also because it usually created keycaps that were much stronger than the hardware onto which they were attached.
In modern times, the inscriptions or writings observed on the keycaps are created by laser engraving or through stamping. Double shot keycaps are still available and can be bought from most stores. They are preferred for their general longevity and durability. Modern keycaps may be purchased as a replacement set for those that come with the keyboard and should be compatible with any keyboard that was designed with a cherry MX-style stem. The most common materials used are PBT and ABS plastics, and ABS is cheaper than PBS.
The star brand
There are many companies that manufacture replacement keypads, but among these, Keycool stands out as one of the best. Keycool 104 Keycaps are designed to be durable and comfortable for long-term use. The caps are made of ABS plastic which has translucent legends double shot into the caps, an obvious improvement over most stock keycaps that are simply reverse coating (Reverse coated keycaps are manufactured from transparent plastic, they are then painted on every side save for the legend to allow light to pass through. these caps are of low quality because the paint at the top of the cap quickly wears off with continued use).
Keycool 104 Key caps offer a wonderfully and competitively priced opportunity for keyboard customization that that is simply too good to ignore, and customer reviews on the product's page largely agree with this fact. Keycool keycaps have received nearly 100 percent positive reviews from all clients who have purchased them.
